On June 18, I had the pleasure of attending the Central North Carolina Junior District Dairy Show. Children of all ages, who have been raising and caring for their dairy cows, get the chance to show them off in a friendly competitive environment. This year it included my granddaughter, Belle Sousa. She attended Cow Camp, run by Samantha Gasson of Bull City Farms. Participants from other farms also entered the show.
The photos are divided into roughly three groups. First, the children parade with their cows, showing them off to the judge. This is not easy. The children were expected to be able to guide and handle the cow as the judge watches. These cows are heifers, meaning that they are young females who have not yet given birth. They then line up and the judge talks to them as a group. Second, the children are shown in portraits and candids with their bovine friends. These were taken either during the parade or while the judge talked to each child. Each was expected to know details about their cow, such as name and date of birth. Not every child was photographed, and for that I apologize. Third, family photos of Belle, Mary Anna, and even me (sitting among the children) are shown in a series of images. I took photos 1-41. Mary Anna took numbers 42-44.
