On Sept. 12, Mary Anna & her friend/coach, Dennis McGraw, swam in the annual "Pier 2 Pier" race in Wrightsville Beach (near Wilmington). There were about 170 participants, including a contingent of about 50 women naval cadets. This is a 2 mile swim from the Crystal to the Johnnie Mercer pier thru swarms of jelly fish. Their stings are like being raked with multiple bee stings. Although a significant number of the cadets did not finish, Mary Anna finished first in her age group (she was by far the oldest woman in the race; no one's going to beat her) and Dennis finished second in his age group.
