Last Saturday, June 4, 2016, I attended the 12th Annual Beaver Queen Festival, in which people lose their inhibitions to support the beaver! These people had a good time on a hot afternoon, with hilarious costumes, often cross-dressing, adopting Beaver-themed names.

Bribing of the judges is not only allowed, it is encouraged as contestants seek to win the coveted Beaver Trophy. As you will see, Beaver Juice! became the new Queen.

Apparently, this event began as an attempt to preserve a beaver habitat on Ellerbe Creek. It then morphed into supporting what became the Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association. This group works to reduce pollution in the creek and maintain the viability of the watershed area.
