Silent Sam is a Confederate memorial on the UNC campus erected in 1913 to honor students (traitors) who fought for the Confederacy. It has been defaced repeatedly in recent months. Supporters of both the monument & the Confederate flag held a rally on October 25, 2015, when these pictures were taken. They show Sam, the gathering in a parking lot, the march past counter-demonstrators into the quad where Sam stands, the students wanting to "silence Sam," and portraits of some of the participants.
