The original lighthouse on Saint Simons Island was built in 1810 & destroyed by Confederate troops in 1862 to prevent Union forces from using it as a navigational aid. The current structure was built in 1872. The lighthouse became automated in 1952, eliminating the need for a resident keeper. It remains operational. It is supposedly haunted by the ghost of James Gould, a light keeper killed in a dual with his assistant in 1880.
